Amy Chou: Baby It's Cold Outside and The Garden of Love

December 13, 2017

One of my favorite Christmas songs "Baby It's Cold Outside" has become an odd battleground of ideas. In the 40s when it was created, it was merely, well, a song. Today it has been called the "Date Anthem" by major magazines like Salon, Huffington Post, Vox, and Cosmopolitan magazine.

In the song, the man clearly is attempting to seduce a young woman that he is dating to stay over, with the clear possibility and desire of sexual interaction. His motivation is absolutely clear and unequivocal. But with the editors of feminist magazines the motivation is not so clear.

In the above podcast, my friend Amy Chou and I converse with the verse "Baby it's Cold Outside," and The Garden of Love by William Blake.

This poem is indicative of the evil pervasive in our culture today. The evil is not having sex. The evil is not a young 18 year old woman who chooses to sleep with an older man. The evil is not men who try to "pressure" a woman to have sex with him.

The evil is feminist ideology. The ideology that has created a devil out of sex, in the same way and for the same reasons that the church has always made a devil out of sex.

Feminists today are the new priests calling for the sacrifice of young people to surrender their greatest and most noble activity: sex!

The Garden of Love

BY WILLIAM BLAKE

I went to the Garden of Love,

And saw what I never had seen:

A Chapel was built in the midst,

Where I used to play on the green.

And the gates of this Chapel were shut,

And Thou shalt not. writ over the door;

So I turn'd to the Garden of Love,

That so many sweet flowers bore.

And I saw it was filled with graves,

And tomb-stones where flowers should be:

And Priests in black gowns, were walking their rounds,

And binding with briars, my joys & desires.

Baby It's Cold Outside

Baby, It's Cold Outside"

I really can't stay - Baby it's cold outside
I've got to go away - Baby it's cold outside
This evening has been - Been hoping that you'd drop in
So very nice - I'll hold your hands, they're just like ice

My mother will start to worry - Beautiful, what's your hurry?
Father will be pacing the floor - Listen to the fireplace roar
So really I'd better scurry - Beautiful, please don't hurry
Maybe just a half a drink more - Put some records on while I pour

The neighbors might think - Baby, it's bad out there
Say, what's in this drink? - No cabs to be had out there
I wish I knew how - Your eyes are like starlight now
To break this spell - I'll take your hat, your hair looks swell

I ought to say no, no, no - Mind if I move in closer?
At least I'm gonna say that I tried - What's the sense in hurting my pride?
I really can't stay - Baby don't hold out
Ah, but it's cold outside

I've got to get home - Oh, baby, you'll freeze out there
Say, lend me your coat - It's up to your knees out there
You've really been grand - Thrill when you touch my hand
Why don't you see - How can you do this thing to me?

There's bound to be talk tomorrow - Think of my life long sorrow
At least there will be plenty implied - If you caught pneumonia and died
I really can't stay - Get over that hold out
Ah, but it's cold outside
Oh, baby, it's cold outside
Oh, baby, it's cold outside
